This site was founded by John Mills on 19/11/99 based on an idea by Martin Bray. Martin thought that it would be a worthwhile project if each of the Class 47s were to be featured pictorially, initially on the alt.binaries.pictures.rail newsgroup. The plan was that each loco would be covered, one per day, starting with 47001 on 11/11/99 and continuing through until 47981 on 05/01/02.
John felt that such a mammoth undertaking should have a more permanent record and so this site was born. The current caretaker is Steve Jones who is just about keeping on top of things.
The gallery currently contains 5,695 photographs of 786 differently numbered locomotives. All of us involved with the project would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has contributed photographs.
